SOUTHLAKE — What started as a nightmare for Guyer pitcher Sylvia Murillo quickly turned into one of the best performances of her career.

Murillo had a three-run cushion when she took the circle but gave up three walks and hit a batter in the bottom of the first inning. After battling out of danger and giving up only one run, Murillo refocused and dialed in for the second.

The senior bounced back to hold the No. 7 team in Class 6A to two hits and two runs while racking up a career-high 13 strikeouts to give Guyer a 9-2 win in the area round of the playoffs Friday night.

“I had to find myself,” Murillo said. “Coach [Keith] Medford really stresses when you get ahead, stay ahead. When I loaded the bases, I felt like I let him down. I knew I needed to get out of it, and I had to work my tail off to get out.”

Murillo retired 14 Duncanville hitters in a row to end the game and was unhittable after finding her stride in the third inning. Guyer, which used RBI doubles from Murillo, Maddy Holder and Kara DeBruin to take a 3-0 lead in the first, fed off their pitcher’s refound dominance to pull away.

The Lady Wildcats scored two in the third inning, one in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the seventh led by a monster showing at the plate from Holder, who finished a perfect 4-for-4 and completed the cycle with a 2-RBI triple in her final plate appearance.

“I was told but I kind of blocked it out of my mind,” Holder said. “I would have struck out [in my last at bat] if I thought about it. I just wanted to be smart — I wasn’t going to push it, but it happened and I got kind of lucky.”

Guyer had a number of timely hits on top of Holder’s success as Karly Broccoli came up with an RBI triple in the fourth for her first extra base hit of the season. Morgan Medford, who went 0-for-4 last week in a win against Hebron, was 3-for-4 with three runs scored Friday.

The Lady Wildcats also took advantage of Duncanville’s mistakes, scoring twice as a result of baserunners reaching on a dropped third strike.

Guyer advances to the regional quarterfinals to take on Wylie, which the Lady Wildcats swept in the District 6-6A season.

“It’s going to be tough, man,” Keith Medford said. “It’s going to be tough to beat a team three times, four times, whatever it’s going to take. But I’ll take my chances with this group.”
