Baseball: Denton uses five-run fourth to cap sweep of Saginaw Chisholm Trail

SOUTHLAKE — Coming off of a game where Denton used a five-run first inning to cruise to an easy win, the Broncos used another big inning to cruise to a win.

The only difference Friday night for the Broncos was their five-run outburst came in the fourth inning as it pounded Saginaw Chisholm Trail 11-2. Aided from reliable pitching by Austin Wheeler, the Broncos swept the bi-district series and are on their way to the area round.

Heading into the fourth, Denton (20-11-1) was mired in a close game, leading 2-1. Then, with two outs on the board, the next five batters got on base and four recorded an RBI.

“We got a group of guys that try to keep things as simple as possible,” Denton coach Jimmy Webster said. “We do a good job of trying to stay in the moment and do the best we can pitch by pitch and applying pressure from two strike hits and two out hits.”

The highlight of the inning came when Chris Gurley brought two runners in with a hard-hit single to left field.

Gurley finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Another big night came from Brooks Bedinger, who finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

As a team, Denton finished with 11 hits, capitalized on four Chisholm Trail errors in the win, despite leaving seven runners on base.

“It was really our pitching and how we were holding them,” Gurley said. “The momentum brought us into the hits. When we get a three-up, three-down, we just stepped into the box and it was hits, hits, hits.”

On the mound, Wheeler kept the Rangers at bay, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out three in his six innings. In the seventh, Reece Parker came out to close out the game for the Broncos.

“[Wheeler] gives us chances to win,” Webster said. “We didn’t want to make it bigger than it was, it was just give us a chance to win and he did that.”

The power went out in the bottom of the seventh inning for about 20 minutes, but the Broncos were able to close out the game and head into the area round after the dominant two-game showing.

“[We’re] very confident,” Gurley said. “We feel like we can go deep in this tournament. We’ve worked our butts off, and we’re trying to change the culture.”
