Ryan hopes to build on late-season surge

Ryan isn’t a traditional No. 4 seed in the playoffs.

The Raiders (8-14), who started the 5-5A season with four straight losses, went 6-2 to close out the year and swept Wichita Falls Rider last week to clinch a playoff berth. Ryan is hoping that momentum will carry into the Class 5A bi-district round.

The Raiders will take on Haslet Eaton (23-8-1) in a three-game series beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Eaton. Game 2 will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Ryan and Game 3, if necessary, at 1 p.m. Saturday at Eaton.

“It was huge for our program to get that sweep in the last week and get in the playoffs,” Ryan coach Bret Warnack said. “We’ve got a young team and we’ve continued to get better and better throughout the season, so we’re excited about getting in and having a chance to go play in the playoffs.”

Ryan used a pair of strong pitching performances from Carson Kennedy and Cole Canutesen to move past Rider and into the playoffs, and Warnack expects those two to shoulder the load again this week.

Canutesen racked up 14 strikeouts in a win April 24, while Kennedy had a shutout and tallied nine strikeouts in Friday’s victory. Kennedy had three hits at the plate in each game.

“All of our seniors stepped up last week,” Warnack said. “Cole, Carson, Grady Frazee and Wyatt Bell — the four who are in the lineup all the time — did an excellent job, which is needed with a young team. That was huge.”

Regardless of how well the Raiders are playing, the team will have its hands full with an Eaton squad that went unbeaten in District 6-5A and has won 17 straight games.

“Our guys are confident, they’re playing hard and I think they’re starting to believe in each other quite a bit,” Warnack said. “We know we have our work cut out for us with Eaton, but I think we’re loose and ready to go.”
